St. Olaf College presents Six Characters in Search of an Author, Nov. OCTOBER 31, 2001 — Six Character in Search of an Author, a light comedy by Luigi Pirandello, will be presented at St. Olaf College, opening Nov. 8 and running through Sunday, Nov. 17. Oles beat Macalester 35-18 OCTOBER 31, 2001 — The St. Olaf football team continued its winning ways this weekend as it defeated Macalester 35-18 in St. Paul. The Oles (5-3, 4-3 MIAC) won for the second consecutive weekend, assuring them back-to-back seasons with a winning percentage of .500 or better. This would be the first time in a decade that the Oles will have two consecutive winning seasons. Oles Preview Season at Tommie Relays OCTOBER 31, 2001 — On Saturday, October 27, the men?s and women?s St. Olaf Swimming and Diving team encountered this years MIAC competition at the annual Tommie Relays held at the College of St. Catherine. Paul Wellstone to speak on Peace Corps anniversary, peace and justice endowment OCTOBER 31, 2001 — United States Senator Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will speak at daily chapel services on Monday, Nov. 5, when St. Olaf College commemorates the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Peace Corps and celebrates the establishment of an endowment to support peace and justice studies at the college. Mens cross-country takes fourth at MIAC Championships OCTOBER 30, 2001 — The Oles finished fourth at the highly competitive MIAC Championships on Saturday. The black and gold harriers finished a mere point behind third place St. John's and only thirteen points in back of second place Hamline. St. Olaf volleyball goes 3-1 in UW-Whitewater tournament OCTOBER 30, 2001 — St. Olaf went 3-1 with victories over teams previously ranked in the nation including Elmhurst College (4th) and Bethel College (18th). Oles win fourth straight MIAC Championship OCTOBER 29, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s cross country team repeated as MIAC Champions on Saturday, October 27. Led by individual champion Megan Daymont (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) and fourth-place finisher Brigid Franey (Sr., Lexington, Ky), the Oles scored 72 points to edge runner-up Gustavus and Carleton. Professor Emeritus John Maakestad to discuss Arnold Flaten at St. Olaf College Founders Day OCTOBER 26, 2001 — St. Olaf College Professor Emeritus of Art John Maakestad will discuss the work of Arnold Flaten, founder of the art department at St. Olaf, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, during the college?s annual Founders? Day address. St. Paul Chamber Orchestra to present concert at St. Olaf College on Nov. 1 OCTOBER 26, 2001 — The St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and its conductor, Andreas Delfs will present a concert on Thursday, Nov. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel at St. Olaf College. The concert, is free and open to the public. St. Olaf College Choral Festival Sunday, Nov. 4, will feature 1,500 OCTOBER 26, 2001 — More than 1,500 vocalists from area high schools, churches and communities will take part in the 99th annual St. Olaf College Choral Festival Sunday, Nov. 4. The festival will conclude with a free, public concert. Trumpeter Stanley Friedman to perform at St. Olaf College on Friday, Nov. 2 OCTOBER 26, 2001 — Trumpeter and composer Stanley Friedman will present a concert of contemporary brass music on Friday, Nov. 2 at St. Olaf College. The concert, at 8:15 p.m. in Urness Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music, is free and open to the public. Oles women soccer lose close battle to Knights OCTOBER 25, 2001 — The Oles made repeated pushes and were able to ward off many threats made by the Knights. Each team played down to the wire and left all they had out on the field. This loss puts the Oles at 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Oles beat Carleton, MIAC co-champs OCTOBER 25, 2001 — Taking the court for their final regular season conference match, the St. Olaf volleyball team made a splash while dominating the Knights to claim the conference co-champion title. The game scores were 30-21, 30-24, and 30-23. Melius Piano Trio to perform recital at St. Olaf College Wednesday, Oct. 31 OCTOBER 24, 2001 — The Melius Piano Trio ? three St. Olaf College music faculty members on violin, cello and piano ? will perform a recital at 8:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the college. St. Olaf ties for first at Saint Benedict Tournament OCTOBER 24, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s volleyball team had a weekend of intense competition at the Saint Benedict Tournament this past weekend, October 19th and 20th. St. Olaf competed against Nebraska Wesleyan University, Concordia College-Moorhead, Ohio Northern University, and the University of Dubuque. The final result of the tournament held a three-way tie for first place. Women's Soccer Drops Two Over Weekend OCTOBER 24, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s soccer team managed to break their scoreless streak over the weekend but was unable to squeak out any wins. On Saturday, October 20 they took on Nebraska Wesleyan and on Sunday the 21st they made up the postponed game against Saint Benedict. The Oles fell 2-1 to Nebraska and 2-0 to Saint Benedict. Oles lose to Nebraska Weslyan 2-1 OCTOBER 24, 2001 — On Saturday, October 20 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team hosted highly ranked, non-conference opponent Nebraska Wesleyan. Entering the match at 5-8-1, the Oles looked to rebound from a four game losing streak. Ole women finish second at UMN 5K Invite OCTOBER 22, 2001 — Reaching within the strength and depth of the St. Olaf women?s cross-country team, the Oles finished second overall this past weekend at the UMN 5K Invite. Oles snap three game losing streak, defeat Concordia 34-33 OCTOBER 22, 2001 — The St. Olaf football team ended a three game losing streak on Saturday by defeating the Concordia Cobbers by a score of 34-33, capturing the Troll Trophy for second year in a row in the annual Lefse Bowl. Ole volleyball wins 3-0 over the Auggies OCTOBER 18, 2001 — Three players scored double-doubles in kills and digs, leading St. Olaf College to a three-game sweep of Augsburg College in a MIAC volleyball match. Oles lose in overtime to Johnnies 4-3 OCTOBER 18, 2001 — On Wednesday, October 17 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team traveled to Collegeville to take on conference opponent Saint John?s University. The Oles entered the contest with a 5-7-1 overall record (3-2-1 in the MIAC). Ole womens soccer lose 4-0 to Auggies OCTOBER 17, 2001 — Jenny Martin (FY., Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) scored two goals Tuesday night, leading Augsburg College to a 4-0 shutout win over St. Olaf College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer game in Minneapolis. Ole Football Drops Third Straight With Loss To St. Thomas, 28-16 OCTOBER 16, 2001 — The Oles dropped their third consecutive game, and third of the season. Quarterback Joe Hammond (Sr., Neilsville, Wis.), who was under center for the first time in three weeks after returning from a fractured index finger, paced the Ole offense by completing 6 of 21 passes for 231 yards. St. Olaf College volunteers offer "Trick n Treating" community event OCTOBER 16, 2001 — The St. Olaf College Volunteer Network is holding its fifth annual Halloween Party for community children on Wed., Oct. 31, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Buntrock Commons Sun Room. The event is free and open to the public. St. Olaf Band to present fall concert on Sunday, Oct. 28 OCTOBER 16, 2001 — The St. Olaf Band, conducted by Timothy Mahr, will conclude their 2001 fall tour with a home concert at St. Olaf College on Sunday, Oct. 28. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Skoglund Center Auditorium Oles Lose to League Leading Tommies 4-0 OCTOBER 15, 2001 — Another cold, rainy day greeted the St. Olaf women?s soccer team on Saturday, October 13 as they traveled to St. Paul to take on the MIAC leading Tommies of St. Thomas. The Tommies overcame the dreariness with a 4-0 victory. Mens Cross Country Finish 9th at LaCrosse OCTOBER 15, 2001 — The Ole cross country team raced to a respectable ninth place finish at the Jim Drews Invite on Saturday in LaCrosse, Wis. Amongst the teams in the race included Division I powerhouse UW-Madison, Division III top-ranked UW-LaCrosse and second ranked UW-Oshkosh Ole Men Fall To Luther 2-1 OCTOBER 15, 2001 — On Thursday, October 11, the St. Olaf men?s soccer team hosted non-conference opponent Luther College. The Oles entered the contest with an overall record of 5-5-1 looking to bounce back from their loss to Simpson College earlier in the week. Oles Disappointed with Loss to St. Thomas OCTOBER 15, 2001 — On Sunday, October 14 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team hosted conference opponent University of St. Thomas. The Oles entered the contest on a two-game skid in which they lost close contests to Simpson College and Luther College earlier in the week. Going into the match, the Oles possessed a 3-1-1 record in the MIAC. Ole Women Lose 3-1 to the Norse OCTOBER 12, 2001 — On Thursday, October 11 the St. Olaf women?s soccer team hosted Luther College of Decorah, IA. It was an incredibly gorgeous day for soccer but the good weather was unable to boost the Oles to a victory as they fell 3-1. More than 500 high school students expected at St. Olaf College Fall Open House OCTOBER 12, 2001 — More than 500 high school students from across the nation are expected to visit St. Olaf College during its annual Fall Open House Thursday and Friday, Oct. 18-19. Columbia University philosophy professor to present two Belgum lectures OCTOBER 11, 2001 — Lydia Goehr, professor of philosophy at Columbia University, will present her series titled "Listening, Laughing and Learning" during two Eunice Belgum Memorial Lectures at St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Oct. 30. St. Olaf Volleyball Wins 3-1 Over Macalester, Clinch MIAC Playoff Birth OCTOBER 11, 2001 — The Oles had sincere desire and motivation going into this match, coming off of the only conference loss against Bethel, and gained the upper hand winning the match 3-1 against the Scots. St. Olaf is now 15-1 overall and 8-1 in conference. Internationally acclaimed Swiss pianist to perform at St. Olaf College OCTOBER 11, 2001 — Internationally acclaimed Swiss pianist Hanni Schmid Wyss will perform a guest recital at St. Olaf College on Wednesday, Oct. 17. The recital, free and open to the public, will be at 8:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music. Mens Soccer Split Last Two Games OCTOBER 10, 2001 — On Saturday, October 6 the St. Olaf Men?s Soccer Team traveled to St. Peter to take on defending conference champions Gustavus. The Oles entered the contest with 4-4-1 overall record, 2-1-1 in the MIAC. Gustavus entered the match with a 4-1 record in the MIAC. St. Olaf was victorious and moved their record to 5-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the MIAC. Womens Soccer Moves to 8-3 With Win Over St. Marys OCTOBER 10, 2001 — Wet and dreary are probably the two best words to describe the contest between St. Olaf College and St. Mary?s University on Tuesday, October 9. The outcome, however, would be described as neither dreary nor wet from the Oles prospective with a 2-0 win. Oles Mens Golf Continues strong play at Twin Cities Classic OCTOBER 9, 2001 — The Ole men golfers continued their strong, steady play last weekend at the Twin Cities Classic hosted by Gustavus. With this being the Oles last tournament before the conference match at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, it was important that they had a strong showing in order to prepare for the most important contest of the year. St.Olaf Mens Golf Team Ends Season at MIAC Campionships OCTOBER 9, 2001 — Day one showed sunny and warm, but extremely windy weather at Bunker Hills Golf Club. Sophomore Brandt Uthus (Minot, ND) showed promise once again leading the Oles with a strong opening round of 81. Junior Erik Polzin (Bloomington, Minn.) followed with a solid 82. Sophomore Pat Gilles (Madison, Wis.) and senior Brian Odlaug (Maplewood, Minn.) both had strong opening rounds of 85 each. Sophomore Todd Dulin (Orono, Minn.) struggled with the wind and shot a 90 on day one. The Oles tallied a team total of 333 on day one and stood in seventh place. Womens Soccer Lose to GAC but Beat Grinnell OCTOBER 9, 2001 — The Oles lost a hard-fought battle versus Gustavus 1-2 but then bounced back with confidence on their home turf to secure a 3-0 win over Grinnell. The women are showing definite improvement from game to game. Ole Mens Cross Country Victorious in Wisconsin OCTOBER 9, 2001 — Despite running in temperatures which dipped into the thirties and forties, the Oles toughed out the conditions and paced themselves to victory at the Midwest Long and Short Course Championships. St. Olaf finished with fifty-one total points, twenty ahead of second place Minnesota-Duluth. St. Olaf Women's Golf Team Makes Huge Comeback OCTOBER 9, 2001 — The Olaf women's golf team ended their fall golf season with a bang by making a 26 shot improvement on the second day of the MIAC golf tournament to move the team into 6th place. Women Finish 4th Led by Daymont's First Collegiate Victory OCTOBER 8, 2001 — Lead by junior co-captain, Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) set the pace by winning her first collegiate meet with a time of 18:03. Daymont?s victorious pace helped lead the Ole women to finish fourth overall in a field of eighteen teams. St. Olaf Volleyball Splits Over the Weekend OCTOBER 8, 2001 — The weekend brought varying outcomes, but the Oles continue to have high motivation to push toward the conference tournament. After defeating Hamline, the Oles 14-game winning streak was ended by Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 6. St. Olaf Drops Homecoming Contest 38-6 to Bethel OCTOBER 8, 2001 — The St. Olaf football team lost its second straight game to #7 ranked Bethel College 38-6 before a packed house at Manitou field on Saturday afternoon October 6. Mens Soccer Falls to Macalester 3-1 OCTOBER 5, 2001 — On Wednesday, October 3 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team traveled to St. Paul to take on conference rival Macalester College. Women's Soccer Drops First Conference Game to Macalester 3-0 OCTOBER 4, 2001 — It was a day of uncertain weather and the St. Olaf women?s soccer team seemed to be adversely effected by the unpredictability. The final score was 3-0 in favor of Macalester handing the Oles their first conference loss of the season. The Oles took only three shots while the Scots took nine. Volleyball Remains Undefeated 14-0 OCTOBER 4, 2001 — After a long stretch of rest with a weekend off, the Oles hit the court running Wednesday, October 3rd. On St. Mary?s home court, the Oles volleyball team competed at the highest intensity level yet for a match this season. The Ole Women Win Big, 6-1 At Concordia OCTOBER 1, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s soccer team made the four-hour trip to Moorhead on Saturday, September 29th to play the Cobbers of Concordia. The trip turned out to be well worth the drive. St. Olaf 11th of 48 at Roy Griak Invite OCTOBER 1, 2001 — The St. Olaf Men's Cross Country team finished 11th at the Roy Griak Invitational in a strong field of 48 Division II and III teams. Wilbur leads Oles to two victories over weekend OCTOBER 1, 2001 — On Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team were victorious in two contests. The first opponent was conference foe Concordia and Sunday?s contest was with non-conference, Colorado College. Award-winning Illinois author Rebecca Wee to read from new book Oct. 9 OCTOBER 1, 2001 — Award-winning Illinois author Rebecca Wee will read from and sign copies of her new book of poetry Uncertain Grace on Tuesday, Oct. 9. The reading, free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Rolvaag Library Room 525 on the St. Olaf College campus. Wee will sign copies of Uncertain Grace after the reading. The reading is co-sponsored by the St. Olaf and Carleton College Bookstores. Football Suffers First Loss of Season 20-0 to Augsburg OCTOBER 1, 2001 — The St. Olaf football team endured its first loss of the season this weekend, falling to Augsburg College 20-0 in Minneapolis. Ole Women Finish 6th at Pre-Nationals Meet OCTOBER 1, 2001 — This past weekend the top Ole women runners raced at the Brissman/Lundeen Pre-National Invitational in Rock Island, Illinois, and the remainder of the team ran at the JV Classic meet hosted by St. Olaf. Mens Cross Country JV Competes at the St. Olaf JV Classic OCTOBER 1, 2001 — While St. Olaf took their top twelve runners to compete at the Roy Griak Invitational, the remaining harriers competed in Friday's JV Classic. The Oles ran against JV teams from the national powerhouses UW-LaCrosse and UW-Eau Claire and top MIAC contenders St. John's and Carleton Womens Tennis Competes at Fall Tournament OCTOBER 1, 2001 — Five players from the St. Olaf women?s tennis team competed on Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 in two tournaments, the Midwest Regional and the Fall Invitational both held concurrently at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. |
